This is the first League Cup meeting between Luton and Gillingham since 1979-80, when the Gills won 4-1 on aggregate over two legs in the first round.

Gillingham have progressed from two of their last four League Cup ties against top-flight opposition, as many as they had in their first 19. They eliminated Brentford on penalties in the third round of last season's competition.

Luton were eliminated from the League Cup in the second round in both of their last two seasons as a top-flight side, going out to Bradford in 1990-91 and Birmingham in 1991-92. They'd made the final in two of the three campaigns prior to this, beating Arsenal in 1988 and losing to Nottingham Forest in 1989.

Having made it to the fourth round last season, Gillingham are looking to reach at least round three of the League Cup in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2003-04 (a run of three).
