Alfie May wins Sky Bet League One Golden Boot award

Charlton Athletic striker Alfie May has won the Sky Bet League One Golden Boot award for the 2023/24 season.

The prolific poacher finished the season with 23 goals, two ahead of Portsmouth’s Colby Bishop.

The 30-year-old has now passed the 20-goal mark in Sky Bet League One for three successive seasons, having also achieved the feat with previous club Cheltenham Town.

He was named Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for October after scoring seven goals in six matches in the month and was also named in the EFL Team of the Season for League One.

May flitted around non-league football in his native Kent until he joined Doncaster Rovers at the age of 23.

He joined Charlton last summer and his goals played a vital role in keeping the club above the Sky Bet League One relegation zone.

May scored 36% (23 out of 64) of the Addicks’ league goals this season. He has scored a brace on six occasions, five of them coming at The Valley.

May said: “It’s been a great season for me personally. Winning the Golden Boot is something I’ve dreamt of doing and over the last couple of seasons I’ve been in and around it and been close. Coming from non-League to now being the top scorer in League One is something that will live with me forever and it’s a great achievement for me and my family.”

Sky Bet EFL Football Trader Ivor Davies said: Alfie May enjoyed a sensational debut season for Charlton in which the striker scored 23 League One goals. The Addicks finished lower than expected but May was their shining light throughout.

Installed as the 12/1 favourite before a ball was kicked the striker hit the front at the start of March and never looked back as he finished two clear of Pompey frontman Colby Bishop. He'll be hoping to fire Charlton to promotion next season and we have them chalked up as 9/2 chance to finally get out of League One next term.

The Sky Bet League One Golden Glove was won by Derby County’s Joe Wildsmith who kept 20 clean sheets.
