Barnsley's Gabriel Slonina has been awarded the Carabao Cup Player of the Round award for Round One.

The goalkeeper, who joined the South Yorkshire side on a season-long loan from Chelsea earlier in the month, was the hero as the Reds advanced to Round Two of the competition.

Darrell Clarke's side had to come from behind against league rivals Wigan Athletic away from home at the DW Stadium in Round One.

Thelo Aasgaard opened the scoring in the first half before Donovan Pines equalised for the visitors after the break. It finished 1-1 after 90 minutes with the tie set to be decided by penalties.

Slonina, a USA international, made two crucial saves in the shoot-out, keeping out Aasgaard and then Josh Stones as Barnsley progressed 4-2 on spot-kicks.

“It feels amazing to have my debut come across in that way, but we produced a team effort in the second half to get back in the game, and I’m glad that I could be part of that," Slonina said.

“It’s extra special that the fans voted for me, and I wouldn’t have been able to have such a great start without their support.”

The 20-year-old saw off competition from Watford's Tom Ince, Blackpool's Matt Pennington and Crawley Town's Jack Roles to land the accolade.

Barnsley take on Championship opposition Sheffield United in a South Yorkshire derby in Round Two next week at Oakwell.
