Stoke smash six, Preston and Sheffield United victorious

It was an eventful night as four games took place in the Sky Bet Championship. Here's the roundup:

Tom Cannon scored four goals as Stoke City thrashed Portsmouth to claim their first win under new head coach Narcis Pelach.

Cannon gave the hosts a deserved lead after 13 minutes with his first goal for the club when he curled in a free-kick from 25 yards.

Portsmouth drew level after 29 minutes when Mark O'Mahony finished off a swift counter-attack, but Stoke scored twice in three minutes through Cannon and Sam Gallagher before half-time.

Cannon netted twice in quick succession after the break, before Andrew Moran completed the rout over the visitors, who still remain winless after eight league games.

At Bramall Lane, Sheffield United maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Swansea City.

The Blades took the ead on the stroke of half-time as Josh Tymon volleyed into his own goal moments after Myles Peart-Harris wasted a glorious chance to put Swansea ahead.

The home side significantly improved after the restart and had chances to extend their lead - with Andre Brooks, Kieffer Moore and Tyrese Campbell coming close to netting.

The victory was enough to lift Chris Wilder's outfit up to third and ensure they preserved their status as the only side in the Sky Bet Championship without a defeat to their name this season.

Swansea dropped to 12th after seeing their three-game unbeaten run come to an end.

Meanwhile Milutin Osmajic's double and a superb Ali McCann strike helped Preston North End see off Watford 3-0.

Osmajic slotted home his first early in the second half before guiding a deflected Kaine Kesler-Hayden shot soon afterwards.

McCann then sealed Preston's second win of the season, finding the net with a hooked half-volley from a free-kick to end Watford's hopes with 15 minutes to go.

The defeat is Watford's third of the season, leaving them eighth in the table, while Paul Heckingbottom's Preston climb out of the bottom three with their win at Deepdale.

Elsewhere, Bristol City kept their first clean sheet of the season as the Robins and Sheffield Wednesday played out a draw at Ashton Gate.

Wednesday, looking for successive Championship wins for the first time this season, took 80 minutes to register an effort on target as they looked a shadow of the side that had beaten early pacesetters West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

What few decent chances there were fell to the home side but when they did breach the visitors' rearguard they found goalkeeper James Beadle in good form.

The on-loan Brighton stopper denied Anis Mehmeti, Joe Williams and Nahki Wells, and also had to be alert to save from his own player, Marvin Johnson, when the midfielder inadvertently diverted a cross towards goal.
