EFL round-up: Maja the man as Baggies stay top

It was another action-packed matchday in the EFL with 23 fixtures played across the three divisions on Saturday.

Here we pick out a few highlights from the latest matchweek.

Sky Bet Championship

Josh Maja's tap-in was enough for West Bromwich Albion to stay top of the pile in the Sky Bet Championship as the Baggies narrowly overcame Plymouth Argyle 1-0 at the Hawthorns. Maja now has six goals for the campaign to lead the goalscoring charts in the division.

Local lad Chris Rigg was the matchwinner for Sunderland as they defeated North East neighbours Middlesbrough to bounce back to winning ways and keep pace at the top.

It was an impressive first home league win under new boss Johannes Thorup for Norwich City as they thrashed Watford at Carrow Road thanks to goals from Callum Doyle, Borja Sainz, Marcelino Nunez and Ben Chrisene.

Leeds United were 2-0 winners at Cardiff City on an emotional afternoon as both sides paid tribute to Sol Bamba, the former Cardiff and Leeds captain who died last month aged just 39.

Wrexham kept hold of their place at the summit of Sky Bet League One with a 2-1 home win over Crawley Town. The Red Dragons' tally of 73 home league goals since the start of last season is more than any side across England's top four divisions.

Second place Birmingham City, who beat Wrexham on Monday night, followed that up with a 2-0 win away to Rotherham United. Jay Stansfield adding another to his tally to make it three goals in two league games since his return to Blues.

A contender for result of the day would have to be Northampton Town, who came away from Huddersfield Town 3-1 winners having previously gone three without a win before today's game.

Bolton Wanderers picked up a much-needed victory as Dion Charles bagged a first-half hat-trick to help Ian Evatt's side to a 5-2 win over Reading.

Barrow profited from the Magpies' first defat of the season as their 2-0 win over Newport County saw them climb to first with Elliot Newby and Theo Vassell on the scoresheet.

It was a winning start to life as Carlisle United manager for Mike Williamson as the Cumbrians registered a 2-0 victory away at Swindon Town.  Carlisle have now won each of their last three EFL away matches against Swindon Town, scoring exactly two goals in each of those victories.
