How football reacted to Josh Windass wonder goal for Sheffield Wednesday

Josh Windass ensured a perfect start to 2025 with a sensational strike from inside his own half as Sheffield Wednesday defeated Derby County 4-2 on New Year's Day.

It saw the 30-year-old into double figures for goals in the Sky Bet Championship this season, with the wonder goal also coming on his 160th appearance for the Owls.

The victory lifts Danny Rhol's side up to ninth in the Championship, and they are now just three points outside the play-off places.

"It was flicked round the corner and I thought I've not been on long so I'm not going to run any further, so I just hit it and it went in," Windass explained at full-time.

"As soon as I saw the goalkeeper off his line I knew I could reach, so it was just about getting the technique right."

Windass started on the bench with Röhl opting to rotate during a busy festive schedule, but the German coach was full of praise for the strike at full-time.

"Josh has scored a couple of times like this and for me it was outstanding. He is in great form at the minute," Röhl said.

There was a huge reaction across social media with one fan saying the goal was 'definitely better than Beckham's' - referring to the England legend's strike from the halfway line in 1996.

It was described as the 'goal of the century' by another, and Sky Sports' Soccer Special panel were also in awe of the strike, with Paul Merson saying: "Wow, that's amazing. It's up there [with Beckham's]. Unreal."

Another fan added: "One of the best goals you'll ever see from Josh Windass. The vision, the execution. Was ten yards inside his own half. Incredible goal."
