Bromley moved a step closer to promotion to League One but missed the chance to seal a historic rise as they were held to an entertaining goalless draw by Cambridge United at Hayes Lane.

The Ravens preserved their unbeaten home record but could not find the breakthrough that would have lifted them into the top three and secured promotion to the third tier for the first time in the club’s history.

The visitors came closest to scoring in the first half when Shayne Lavery met a delivery with a firm header that struck the crossbar, denying Cambridge the lead.

Bromley pushed strongly for a winner after the break, with Cambridge emergency loan goalkeeper Jack Walton producing an excellent double save to keep out the hosts during a spell of sustained pressure.

The clearest opportunity arrived deep into added time, but Cambridge defender Kellen Watts produced a vital block to deny Bromley a decisive goal and earn his side a valuable point.

The result means Andy Woodman’s side still require one win or two draws from their final two matches to guarantee promotion.

Bromley could yet be promoted before kicking another ball if Notts County fail to beat Barnet on Saturday.

Cambridge remain third in the table, six points behind Bromley with a game in hand, and two points clear of fourth-placed Notts County as the promotion race continues to intensify.
