Rubin Colwill scored late on as promoted Cardiff City continued their celebrations and confirmed Port Vale’s relegation from Sky Bet League One.

The Wales international, who had netted a decisive goal in Cardiff’s promotion-clinching win at Reading at the weekend, struck again with 11 minutes remaining to seal victory and end Vale’s hopes of survival.

Port Vale knew only maximum points from their remaining fixtures would keep them alive, and they battled hard to stay in the contest, with goalkeeper Nathan Trott producing a fine save to deny Ben Garrity’s header early in the second half.

However, Cardiff dominated possession and created the clearer chances, with Callum Robinson, Joel Colwill and Yousef Salech all going close before the breakthrough arrived.

The decisive moment came when Colwill rose unmarked to meet Chris Willock’s cross and head home, capping a controlled Bluebirds performance and consigning Jon Brady’s side to an immediate return to League Two.
