Drinan’s hat-trick seals a perfect week after staying close to the Robins’ nest.

Aaron Drinan (SWINDON TOWN v Colchester United)

Transfer deadline week in Wiltshire began with Swindon fans fearful that they would lose last season’s leading League Two goalscorer, Aaron Drinan.

Not only did he stay, but the Irishman signed a new contract to keep him at the County Ground until 2030.

And then he celebrated in style four days later, capping off his momentous week with the hat-trick that defeated Colchester United.

Drinan tapped home the equaliser after his penalty was saved, then struck twice in three minutes, first a thumping effort before slotting home a cool finish in front of his adoring Swindon faithful.

All’s Fer in love and local derbies

Fer Lopez (WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS v West Bromwich Albion)

There were more than three points at stake amid a febrile atmosphere at Molineux.

Wolves hadn’t beaten Black Country rivals West Brom at home since 2011 and had lost their past two home derbies by scorelines of 1-5 and 2-3.

The importance of the occasion was not lost on Lopez as he capitalised on an errant Nat Phillips back-pass to nip in and score the only goal.

He set off to join in the hysteria of the Wolves fans, pointing maniacally to the badge on his shirt as he looked up to the ecstatic supporters.

Wootton seals his place in Stockport history books

Kyle Wootton (STOCKPORT COUNTY v Peterborough United)

Kyle Wootton’s football career could best be described as fitful before he joined Stockport County for their return to the EFL in the summer of 2022.

Since then, the histories of club and talismanic striker have become entwined in glory.

Wootton’s goals have helped Stockport to one promotion and three play-off campaigns.

When the 29-year-old scored the winner from close range against Peterborough, his 66^th goal for County made him the club’s leading goalscorer this century.

Smyth scores late equaliser as the R's rescue point with 10 men.

Paul Smyth (QPR v Preston North End)

Smyth salvaged a point for 10-man Queens Park Rangers with a stunning 90th-minute strike, completing a remarkable comeback after his side had trailed 2-0.

A Jonny Kenny brace, combined with a red card for QPR's Dennis Cirkin, appeared to have put Preston firmly in control.

However, the hosts mounted an impressive second-half fight, and the turnaround was completed in dramatic fashion when Smyth found space on the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable effort, leaving home supporters in disbelief.
