West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been named the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for September.

With promotion this season’s only aim at the London Stadium, Nuno is working under self-imposed pressure. He didn’t panic over a slow August start and responded by leading West Ham to 18 goals and 13 points from five unbeaten games.

Nuno said: “This award is something that must be dedicated to more than one person. It is shared between everyone here who has played a part in helping the team to achieve positive performance and results - all of the coaches, the backroom team and the wider support staff.

“I also want to share it with our supporters, who have given us such fantastic backing. If I look at September, I think of nearly 5,000 of them travelling up to Bolton Wanderers on a Tuesday night, or three home matches in the space of 10 days with massive crowds at London Stadium.

“That collective effort and togetherness is the crucial key to any success that we enjoy, and also what makes it so rewarding.”

Danny Wilson chairs the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “After steadying the ship from a rough start to the campaign, Nuno’s team were free-scoring in September. 18 scored in all and collected 13 points giving the Hammers fans hope of a quick return to the Premiership.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “It was a slow start for West Ham by the standards everyone expected from them, but Nuno has done a brilliant job to keep calm and guide them back on the right path.

“They picked up 13 points from five unbeaten games in September and scored a whopping 18 goals along the way.”

Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies said: “Nuno Espirito Santo oversaw an impressive September at West Ham, with the Hammers taking 13 points from a possible 15 and scoring 18 goals along the way.

“Having been 7/4 favourites for the title before a ball was kicked they had drifted to 5/2 at the start of September but an excellent month has seen them cut to 11/10 and promotion back to the Premier League is now just 2/9.”
