Stoke City striker Sam Gallagher is the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month winner for September.

Gallagher showed spatial awareness and impeccable technique as he halted his run onto a long forward pass, drew the ball back into his path and struck his shot with controlled power.

Gallagher said: “I’m made up to win the award; thank you to everyone who voted.

“More than anything, I am just pleased I was able to help the team to win the game.

My strike against Wolves didn’t get a nomination so I was happy to get the nomination this time around!

“It was one of those moments where everything came together perfectly, it’s the type of goal I always dreamt of scoring as a kid and I’ll definitely remember it as one of my favourite highlights of my career.

“Jack McGlynn’s goal a few minutes earlier was deserving of the award in its own right and we’ve had some fun in the past couple of weeks debating who might win.”

Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit Don Goodman said: “There was so much to like about Sam Gallagher’s goal as he somehow turned a hopeful ball over the top into a wonder goal for his team.

“He expertly used his body to hold off the defender and pluck the ball from the sky, before he swivelled and hit a stunning volley into the top corner.”

Gallagher beat off competition from his teammate Jack McGlynn, West Ham United’s Divine Mukasa and Southampton’s Welington.
